This August, Rio de Janeiro—that great city of beaches, Carnival, samba, capoeira and bikinis—will host the Games of the XXXI Olympiad, otherwise known as Jogos Olímpicos de Verão de 2016 or the 31st Summer Olympics.
How a city synonymous with being a party town can be more hyped than usual is hard to imagine—but you can bet they’ll be trying!
In 2014 Brazil hosted the FIFA World Cup of soccer and despite some pretournament concerns about crime and the nation’s preparedness, the competition went off without much of a hitch. The World Cup, however, was spread across South America’s largest country, with matches in no fewer than 12 cities; this time Rio is keeping the party to itself!
Though struck by fears of the Zika virus, the games have nonetheless inspired a wave of eager travellers. If you’ve always wanted to visit Rio, to gaze out across the city from the top of Sugar Loaf Mountain or sport your thong on the Copacabana, 2016 could well be the time to fulfill that dream. With hundreds of thousands of athletes, officials, journalists and visitors expected from all over the world, Rio’s vibe will be rocking 24 hours a day for the full 17 days, beginning on August 5.
Of course, there’s a downside to visiting any place during a massive celebration—from hotel costs that veer through the roof to mammoth traffic jams and general congestion, to stifling security and the inevitable attendance of the world’s best pickpockets and con artists. If you’re not actually going for the event and have little patience for those particular things, you might give Rio a pass. Or, to avail yourself of the best of both worlds, consider visiting the city beforehand—when the prices are lower and the buzz of expectation fills the air.
