Thailand has long been one of the world’s great travel and adventure destinations—it’s got wildlife, history, culture, jungles, beaches and some of the friendliest local population you’ll meet. (They don’t call it the Land of Smiles for nothing!)
This five-day express exploration takes you from the vibrant capital of Bangkok north to the country’s blossoming ethical-tourism hub, Chiang-Mai. Enjoy night markets and stay in a hill tribe lodge; tour temples and palaces; travel by sleeper train, tuk tuk, rickshaw and longtail boat; enjoy a local dance performance and even learn to cook pad Thai and other classic Thai dishes.
Days 1-2: Digging into every requisite hotspot in Bangkok—the Grand Palace, the 24-hour flower market, Wat Pho and long-tail boat rides across the Chao Phraya River
Day 3: Riding the comfortable overnight sleeper train up to Chiang Mai to explore the massive Doi Suthep Temple and walled-off old town before visiting a Hmong hill tribe for a barbecue dinner and authentic local dance show
Days 4: Heading north to Chiang Rai to visit the Golden Triangle and learn about the opium trade that was notorious among this intersection of Thailand, Myanmar and Laos; ending the day with a visit to the infamous, pop culture–heavy White Temple, Wat Rong Khun
Days 5: Ending the tour in Chiang Mai with a cooking class where you’ll make your own pad Thai, then exploring Chiang Mai at your leisure
